Counterfeiting wine: low-end edition

July 12th, 2010 admin

The British tabloid The Sun reports on wine fraud at a British supermarket: a wine consumer in Britain says he bought an obviously fake bottle of Louis Jadot Pouilly-Fuissé on closeout at Tesco. The consumer says that the label was so bad that it “looked photocopied” and had a screwcap instead of the normal cork closure. Moreover, he told The Sun , that it didn’t pass his taste test at home: “Instead of a nice French Burgundy, this was a cheap German …

SPIT: the wrong end In Wednesday’s post about wine closure preferences , some commenters expressed frustration about not being able to reinsert a synthetic cork back into an unfinished bottle. That reminded me that a winemaker once told me that if you do that with a regular cork, be sure to keep the same side facing down, since the top may...

Canadian cows drink red wine for better flavor
The world wine glut just found a new category of consumer: cows. A farmer in British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley is feeding her cattle red wine for the last 90 days before slaughter. According to the Vancouver Sun , Janice Ravndahl of Sezmu Meats stumbled on the idea while watching chef Gordon Ramsey feed beer to pigs on his show, The F Word....
Wine personality of the decade? The screwcap
Wine personality of the decade? The screwcap
As the recent online survey on the excellent Dr Vino blog has demonstrated rather well (IMHO), it’s very hard to pick one single person who deserves to win this award. So my vote goes to a thing, not a person. And that thing is the screwcap . 10 years ago cork was performing pretty badly. Cork taint was a big issue, and the Australians were...

Is Hello Kitty wine the Joe Camel of wine? [poll]
In a collision of two of the last decade’s most absurd wine trends, celebrity wines and critter labels collide in the form of a new Hello Kitty line of wines. Is this wine targeting minors, adding fuel to the fire of distributors who play the underage drinking card in the direct shipping debate? The wine’s marketer told LA Weekly :...

Organic wine, factory wine, machines, 99p wine — sipped & spit
SPIT: human interaction After many years of discussion, you can now buy wine from a vending machine in select Pennsylvania grocery stores. Added bonus is that consumers must take a breathalyzer test before making the purchase. In their lengthy Q&A, the PLCB doesn’t state whether the grocery stores–not known for giving up precious...

Maryland wine shipping rides a wave of support–and pessimism
Friday was a rare moment in the legislative sun for the subject of wine direct shipping in the Maryland, where, as we discussed, is a felony to ship wine . Consumers and wine industry experts gave testimony before a committee. Tom Wark, executive director of the Specialty Wine Retailers’ Association, who was there writes via email: “Huge...

Coenobium – a hard to pronounce wine made by nuns
“Pass some more of the nun wine.” I overheard someone say that at the other end of my table recently. Not Blue Nun , mind you. But a wine actually made by nuns! Since the Trappist monks in Belgium still make (and market) Chimay beer, I was pleased to discover that Trappist (Cistercian) nuns still make wine in Lazio, a little to the...

When small wine shops are great–and when they fail
Eric Asimov has a long piece in today’s NYT about small wine shops . He highlights a number of local, independent shops mostly around New York City. If you are familiar with our map of NYC wine shops , then you knew about virtually every store in his story already! I’d also highlight Le Vigne , which is a good, new shop that didn’t...
