Acid rain, which destroyed trees and killed whole lakes full of fish in the ’70s and ’80s, is back . This time, though, it’s not raining nearly as much sulfur as it is nitric acid, according to Scientific American . And a good deal of the nitric seems to be coming from fertilizer. The old-school acid rain came mainly from power plants. It was bad enough, and obvious enough (it dissolved statuary in Washington, D.C., and elsewhere), that the then-saner Congress passed amendments to the Clean Air Act to force reductions of sulfur dioxide emissions from power plants. Those emissions have fallen by 90 percent. Congress set limits on nitrous oxide, too, but …
