McDonald’s may be sued for Happy Meal toys

Shrek drek : Do inexpensive plastic toys lure children–or their parents–into making unhealthy food choices? The Center for Science in the Public Interest believes they do and is threatening to sue McDonald’s if the company doesn’t stop using toys to promote its products. “DreamWorks is the supplier of the drug and McDonald’s is the pusher and distributor in this country,” said CSPI attorney Jeff Cronin. News Update: McDonald's Corp. CEO A...McDonald's Corp. (NYSE:MCD) chief executive Jim Skinner said that he will defend the fast food chain's use of toys to promote Happy Meals to children, amidst a consumer advocacy group's threat to sue McDonald's over the issue. Skinner penned a letter July 6th to the Washington-based Center for Science in the Public Interest's (CSPI) executive director criticizing the consumer group's "inflammatory rhetoric" that putting toys in McDonald's Happy Meals is illegal, deceptive and hooks children. "CSPI is wrong in its assertions and frivolous in its legal threats," wrote Skinner. "CSPI's twisted characterization of McDonald's as 'the stranger in the playground handing out candy to children' is an insult to every one of our franchisees and employees around the world." McDonald's has been criticized in the past for targeting children through marketing, and CSPI officials said in June that the group would sue the fast food giant within 30 days unless it stops promoting Happy Meal sales through toy-related marketing. Officials from the advocacy group cite that toy-related promotions violate consumer protection laws in Texas, Massachusetts, New Jersey, California and the District of Columbia, the Wall Street Journal reports. Shares of McDonald's were trading up 1.4% earlier Wednesday at $67.01, and continue to trade up 1.16% at $66.88.
