EPA to increase oversight over CAFO manure

May 30th, 2010 admin

Thanks in part to a lawsuit from the Natural Resources Defense Council, Sierra Club and Waterkeeper Alliance, the EPA has agreed to increase its oversight of manure discharges from concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs)*. The EPA estimates that CAFOs in the U.S.generate three times more bodily waste than humans do, yet CAFOs have virtually no waste treatment facilities. Manure digesters clash with air quality requirements
Cracking down on methane labs: When animal manure decomposes, it releases methane, a greenhouse gas far more potent than carbon dioxide (on a mass basis). To avoid these emissions, some are installing manure digesters, in which bacteria convert the waste to methane gas. The methane is then burned in an internal combustion engine or a gas turbine...

Giant Gas Bubbles Erupt in Manure Lagoons
There are bubbles of gas in dairy farmer Tony Goltstein’s pool of manure . Bubbles “the size of small houses,” as the Wall Street Journal describes it. Bubbles that can be seen in satellite photos of his Indiana farm. Yikes. The methane gas, of course, comes from the 21 million gallons of cow manure that are decomposing in the...

The manurification of America
A perfect shitstorm: On some farms, animal manure can be a valuable asset, a way to improve the soil in the fields. But for today’s massive factory farms — and, increasingly, the nation’s air and waterways — manure is a huge liability, reports the Post’s David A. Fahrenthold. Decomposing manure from factory farms is the U.S.’s...

So we set off at some unearthly hour and headed out for the sea. It was too rough to actually go in the water, but fortunately the boys had brought along some  Read More →

Bottled water’s energy budget
