Apparently Bad Foods are Bad for You

The Center for Science in the Public Interest has issued this year’s Xtreme Eating Awards , bestowing honors on eight restaurant meals and one dessert that are so ridiculously unhealthy that they stand out even from the usual bad-for-you fare that permeates the nation. These lists are always amusing, and perhaps useful, but for me, they’re starting to lose their shock value. Shocking or not, 90% of Americans consume sodium in amounts that are above their healthy daily limit. These finding were published earlier this week in the Center for Disease Control’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report ( MMWR ) . Last week I reported how, even as the Gulf tragedy was starting to unfold, ethanol interests were blanketing Twitter with pro-biofuels rhetoric . Corn farming in the United States has for decades been sending vast amounts of fertilizer runoff downriver into the Gulf, which has created a “dead zone,” choking off sea life. The argument...
Should we be adding nutrition to New York’s list of leadership roles in addition to finance, tourism, and entertainment? After paving the path with calorie labeling in fast food restaurants, banning trans-fat, shocking us with anti-soda pop ads , and then suggesting a tax on sugary drinks, the city’s department of health circa January...
This is a healthy quick meal you could put together during the week and I promise you, you won’t even miss the meat! The sweetness of the caramelized onions, paired with the earthy flavor of the portobellas are a perfect combination. I decided to use a whole wheat pasta which held up perfectly to the dense texture of the mushrooms. Ingredients:...
A perfect shitstorm: On some farms, animal manure can be a valuable asset, a way to improve the soil in the fields. But for today’s massive factory farms — and, increasingly, the nation’s air and waterways — manure is a huge liability, reports the Post’s David A. Fahrenthold. Decomposing manure from factory farms is the U.S.’s...
Campbell’s is recalling a large number of it’s signature Spaghettio’s canned spaghetti and meatballs products. Turns out somebody in the factory forgot to turn the oven on and the meatballs have been undercooked. If people just heat the product instead of thoroughly cooking the meat, they may get sick. Hence the recall. Thank...
One of Michael Pollan’s ” food rules ,” is—or, more accurately, was—to eat only foods that list five or fewer ingredients. But I came upon a video of a January bookstore appearance in which Pollan says, well, forget that rule. Why? Because of the “jiu-jitsu” employed by the food industry whenever someone offers...
You’ve probably heard about service programs that put volunteer teaching assistants in classrooms of underprivileged schools or put new college graduated into troubled schools. A new program called Food Corps puts a twist in that old formula, sending volunteers into school kitchens and purchasing offices. Starting in 2011 the program will provide...
