Most Dietary Supplements Are Tainted
Most Dietary Supplements Are Tainted
Nearly every dietary supplement available at your local health food store contains contaminants. It could be lead, mercury, arsenic, or other heavy metals. Those don’t exceed levels considered dangerous. But 16 of the 40 supplements tested by the Government Accountability Office contained more than the legally allowed amounts of pesticide...
When the drugs don’t work
I’ve just taken my medication, with a glass of wine. I’m reminded of a comment I heard by a very senior pharmaceutical chief at a small meeting I was involved with in my previous life – held in Basle, Switzerland, with luminaries such as Peter Goodfellow and Craig Venter in attendance. It was looking at genomics. Allen Roses from...

US Dietary Guidelines 2010. Coming Soon.
This is a guest blog post by Parke Wilde and was originally published on his blog US Food Policy . The obesity epidemic is the “single greatest threat to public health in this century,” according to a report yesterday from the expert panel advising the federal government on dietary guidelines. Following an earlier report from the Institute...
Report Urges a Stronger FDA
Report Urges a Stronger FDA
The Institute of Medicine’s assessment of the Food and Drug Administration comes as no surprise: The agency is too reactive and doesn’t do nearly enough to prevent food-borne illnesses from occurring. The 500-page report, issued yesterday, was requested by Congress. The House passed a food-safety bill last year, and a similar one is...

In a blow to consumer in the UK, and possibly in the US, The Food Standards Agency (same as our FDA) has decided to back off their proposed traffic light nutrition labeling on the front of food packages. According to the Daily Mail: The FSA board yesterday supported a plan that will allow food companies to decide for themselves whether they want...

Vitamins that Kill
Vitamins that Kill
A great article called The Vita Myth appeared earlier this week in online magazine Slate. Science writer Emily Anthes tears apart the $25B-a-year-and-growing supplement industry. Half of Americans pop a multivitamin or other supplement regularly. But substantial studies in the past few years have shown that for the most part, these supplements...

Did You Know? The FDA Hasn’t Got the Right to Recall Poison Food!
That’s right! The FDA doesn’t have the legal power to require companies to recall their tainted products. How’s that for a food safety loophole? Companies that discover a food safety issue in their products may voluntarily recall them and issue a notification to the FDA, but they don’t have to. While in practice most companies...

Why Vitamins Aren’t What You Think
Those who missed it yesterday should check out Emily Anthes’s article in Slate in which she notes that vitamin supplements might be worse than merely useless : They could kill you. She cites a whole bunch of studies backing up both the theory that most supplements in most cases don’t have any beneficial health effect, and the theory...
