Growing up, my brother and I did not have any kind of special relationship. We did not dislike each other but we did not like each other either. I guess you could say we had one typical brother-sister relationship. I had crushes on his friends just about every week and he found my friends a bit too Strawberry Shortcake for his taste. We had wrestling...
Is Chocolate Milk Losing Ground in School Lunches?
Is Chocolate Milk Losing Ground in School Lunches?
Photo: Tony Cenicola | The New York Times Chocolate milk contains way too much sugar. An 8 fl oz serving (the standard carton served in schools) contains 3 teaspoons of added sugar! That sounds more like a treat than a healthy drink. Not something kids should be getting with their lunch at school on a daily basis. The New York Times ran an article...

Democrats Want To Ban School Junk Food
The New York Times on Sunday reported that the Obama administration will soon introduce legislation to restrict junk food in public schools . Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack is talking about the proposal in a speech in Washington, D.C., today. This sequence from the Times ‘ article caught my attention: Orange County High School has vending...

This is a guest post by Lisa Cain, PhD, a.k.a Snack-Girl Do you have a food fight with your child after school? Is he starving because he tossed out his uneaten lunch? Was he  having too much fun in the school cafeteria and simply forgot to eat? You’re not the only family where this happens. That’s why the after school snacks are...

Dr. Pepper Celebrates 125 years by Misleading Consumers
Here’s one of the six retro cans of Dr. Pepper, introduced in celebration of 125 years of making money off of selling a curiously flavored drink. We’ve highlighted one of the most annoying marketing habits of  the past few years, which the Dr has picked up as well  – adding an innocent looking claim “made with real sugar”....

Regular readers will know that I don’t bake. You also know that I am incurably lazy in the kitchen and can’t be bothered to follow complicated recipes. That’s why I was both honored and mortified when Emily Fleischaker from Bon Appetit invited me to a Holiday Bake-Off at the Conde-Nast offices in Times Square. As I read my way...

Sweet Lies About Sugar
The funniest thing I’ve seen so far this week: Audrae Erickson, president of the Corn Refiners Association, telling the Wall Street Journal the other day that the mini-trend of food companies switching from high-fructose corn syrup to sugar is “nothing more than a marketing gimmick.” The Corn Refiners Association is little more...
