What the Romaine Recall Says About Industrial Food
When an outbreak of foodborne disease occurs, the accuracy of information is crucial. When Freshway Foods issued its recall notice yesterday for romaine lettuce , it listed 24 states “east of the Mississippi River.” Among them were Kansas and Missouri. A New York woman is suing General Mills for misleading and false advertising. The products in question are Fruit Roll-Ups, which are sold through General Mills’ Betty Crocker subsidiary. The complaint – while the products are marketed as healthy, they contain partially hydrogenated vegetable oils (a source of trans-fat). Interesting....

Food Industry, Government Mostly Ignore Dangerous E. Coli Strains
The tainted romaine lettuce that made 26 people sick in April, causing kidney failure for three of them, had been tested for E. coli—just not for the strain of E. coli that happened to be there. The tests were for a relatively common, highly virulent strain—E. coli O157:H7—that has caused hundreds of deaths and made thousands of people sick...
Don’t Eat the Tainted Food!
Don’t Eat the Tainted Food!
Food recalls can be effective , the Consumerist reminds us, only when the public pays attention and responds in a sane, smart way. Too often, the public doesn’t. “Look,” writes Carey Alexander, “when the Centers for Disease Control recalls your frozen pot pie because it’s contaminated with salmonella, don’t...

When times get larder: “Food Security for the Faint of Heart” reviewed
The potential for disaster surrounds us every day. The aftershocks of the earthquake in Haiti may seem too big for many Americans to grasp, but we too should have a plan for possible local emergencies such as severe storms that wipe out our power supply for days, earthquakes, long-term illness, or unforeseen personal economic crises. Because when...
