February 27th, 2010 admin

image from the Gothamist It’s Saturday morning, you’re locked in after a blizzard dumped 16 inches of snow at your doorsteps. Your three little ones are demanding their morning cup of hot milk / cocoa. Groggy eyed and still half asleep, you open the fridge and pull out the last carton of milk. As you’re about to open it, you discover that its “use by” date expired 2 days ago. What do you do? A. Take a sniff of the milk, if it smells OK, no problem. B. The kids will drink tea this morning. C. Get the snow shovel and ice scraper and drive to the nearest convenience store. D. Go…

Yogi Berra and the Yankees helped Yoo-hoo chocolate drinks become an American icon in the 40’s and 50’s. The sweet and refreshing chocolaty taste became a kids’ favorite across the nation. When buying Yoo-hoo, many parents mistakenly think they are providing their children a healthy milk-based drink with a touch of sweetness...
Can You Guess the Food Product of the Decade?
Can You Guess the Food Product of the Decade?
I rarely pass up a chance to quote Harry Balzer. Today’s excuse: Balzer, a food-industry analyst and vice president of the NPD Group, says the food of the decade is yogurt . Jeff Wells of the blog Refresh asked him why he chose yogurt. In 2000, about 17 percent of Americans were eating it. By decade’s end, that had climbed to 28 percent....

Haiti Needs Breast Milk; Food Distribution Uneven
Haitian infants urgently need breast milk , according to breast-feeding groups cited by the Los Angeles Times ‘ health blog, Booster Shots. The logistics and infrastructure are now in place to get donated breast milk to the babies, most of them premature or orphaned. Donors need to have their blood tested and answer some health questions...

Chocolate Milk Advice – Syrup, Powder, or Ready-to-Drink? [Inside the Label]
We recently wrote about chocolate milk with too much sugar being served in school lunches. We also covered a chocolate drink that’s better left on the shelf. But as parents, we can’t ignore the fact that kids LOVE sweetened milk. So what alternatives are there for breakfast, suppertime, or afternoon snack companion? We decided to compare...
Bourbon, Beer and Beef Stew
Bourbon, Beer and Beef Stew
Big chunks of beef chuck make this hearty beef stew the perfect solution to a cold winter day. Waking up this morning I was greeted by a gleaming white wonderland outside. It had snowed nearly a foot overnight, and the city looked bright and shiny with it’s newly minted facade. Being a relative newbie to the whole concept of snow, I was...
Are Expiration Dates Meaningless?
Are Expiration Dates Meaningless?
Slate last week published an item by food writer Nadia Arumugam that I wish I had written: She argues that expiration dates on foods are pretty much meaningless . As I write this, Arumagam is talking about the subject on NPR’s Talk of the Nation . The audio will be posted here after about 6 p.m. Eastern time.  Read More →
Defining Milk
Defining Milk
Photo: USA Today There’s a battle brewing between real milk and faux milk, or to be exact over the exact definition of “milk”. A dairy lobby group, the National Milk Producers Federation has petitioned the FDA that the term “milk” be reserved for cow’s milk, although it’s OK with also using the word for...

Raspberry Pistachio Frangipane Tarts With Meyer Lemon Chantilly
If it weren’t for a bit of a chill early morning (pre-sun rising), you’d be hard pressed to feel like it is still winter here. It seems like it all happened in the past couple of days. No more need for a coat, no more fires. Piping bowls of soup are not preciously close to the body and used as hand warmers anymore. The skies are changing...

What’s P-Cresol and why is it in my food? “Don’t Eat That” iPhone app will tell you
A simple little iPhone app launched a few days ago that demystifies the ingredient lists of processed food. Called “Don’t Eat That” ( link to App Store ), it’s a database of information on more than 1,500 food additives and ingredients, broken out into red-lettered lists for those that are believed to be carcinogenic or...
Gladwell: cultural norms affect drinking!
Malcolm Gladwell cracks open a cold one and distills some academic research, as is his wont. This week’s topic: drinking and culture. After discussing the extended example of Bolivians and their norms for drinking 180 proof rum on weekends, he comes to the point that it’s not how much people drink but rather how they drink it that matters....

this was a really quality post. In theory I’d like to write like this too – taking time and real effort to make a good article… but what can I say… I procrastinate a lot and never seem to get something done.
