A lovely northern Rhône Syrah from Maxime Graillot

February 14th, 2010 admin

This is a really lovely northern Rhône Syrah, made by Maxime Graillot, son of Alan (the most famous grower in this appellation of Crozes-Hermitage). It’s quite an edgy, polarising sort of wine, though: with its high acidity and bold, striking flavours, some will fall in love while others will find it a bit too much. It’s just my sort of wine. I’d much rather have these somewhat wild, untamed flavours that speak so clearly …

Syrah: beyond the fruit bomb
While Merlot’s fall from grace can be traced to one line in the movie Sideways , the fall of Syrah has been more difficult to track. Australian wine, with Shiraz as the signature grape, has experienced a decline in sales over the past couple of years. Even more broadly, it’s still a tough sell: producers and retailers have repeatedly told...
Matsutake Gohan Recipe
Matsutake Gohan Recipe
Matsutake gohan (松茸ご飯) or pine mushroom rice is a uniquely fragrant fall delicacy that embodies the essence of Japanese cuisine. It’s simplicity belies the depth of complex flavours that come together in this luxurious bowl of rice and it heralds the coming of fall. In traditional Japanese food, the seasons play a huge part in the...
New Zealand, day 6: Syrah Symposium
A bit of a change. After visiting beautiful vineyards, I’ve been stuck in a room all day. But productively. It has been the Syrah Symposium here in Hawkes Bay. A mixture of science, tasting and opinion. A tight schedule, running from 8 am until 6 pm, with four excellent tasting sessions blended in with the talks. The first, led by the excellent...
Champagne for non-hipsters: what would you pour?
Champagne for non-hipsters: what would you pour?
If you were invited to a sumptuous dinner at your friend’s boss’ house and had to bring the bubbly, would you bring a grower champagne or a better-known label? That was a question I confronted head-on last week. Grower champagnes are a great story, since the wines are made in limited quantities by those who grow the grapes, not the...
Beautifully elegant Aussie: De Bortoli Shiraz Viognier 2004
I have a few bottles of this lurking around, purchased a few years ago for around a tenner a bottle. It’s just beautiful, and at five years old is starting to hit its stride, but clearly has some distance to go. De Bortoli Shiraz Viognier 2004 Yarra Valley, Australia 14% alcohol. 11 months ageing in new and used French oak barrels. This is...

Chicken Enchiladas with Salsa De Chile Rojo and some Queso Fresco sprinkled on top. As much as I love the food of my homeland, eating nothing but Korean and Japanese food for the past thirty days had me itching for a...

Daring Pairings by Evan Goldstein
On this site, we love exotic food-wine pairings . And we often talk about grapes beyond the “ big six .” So it should come as no surprise that I am a fan of Evan Goldstein’s new book, Daring Pairings . (In fact, I provided a blurb for the back cover.) The highly skimmable book starts off with a worthwhile discussion of pairing...

Perceiving chaptalization in the glass: is it possible? [wonky]
Perceiving chaptalization in the glass: is it possible? [wonky]
Here’s a question for all the (Northern European) wine geeks out there: Can you tell if a wine has been chaptalization based solely on the smell and taste? Chaptalization is the term for adding sugar to wine to boost the alcohol level. It is legally permissible in parts of the wine world, particularly northern Europe. Some producers still...
A lovely Kiwi Riesling from Neudorf
New Zealand is, of course, famous for its Sauvignon Blanc, becoming famous for its Pinot Noir, and beginning to make a name for its Syrahs. But what of its Rieslings? I think they’re a bit underrated. They are also quite hard to sell. But I’ve tried some great examples of late, in both the dry style, the just-off-dry style, and the lower...
