Matsutake gohan (松茸ご飯) or pine mushroom rice is a uniquely fragrant fall delicacy that embodies the essence of Japanese cuisine. It’s simplicity belies the depth of complex flavours that come together in this luxurious bowl of rice and it heralds the coming of fall. In traditional Japanese food, the seasons play a huge part in the...

Osechi Ryori (Japanese New Year’s Food)
I’ve written about Japanese New Year’s traditions and I’ve even posted some typical Japanese New Year’s dishes . But this year I decided to go whole hog and make an Osechi Jubako from scratch. You’d think after my recent ramen post (which was nearly a decade in the making), I’d be done with insanely time consuming...

Beef Bourguignon Recipe (video)
One of my goals with NoRecipes is to show you how to make restaurant quality meals that a person who works full time can make. This means taking shortcuts where it won’t be noticed while taking the “scenic route” where it counts. When it comes to stocks, I reserve homemade stock for dishes like clear soups, where the stock is...
Arborio Raisin Rice Pudding
Arborio Raisin Rice Pudding
Now that fall is officially here and the air is cool and crisp outside, inside I’m thinking more and more about comfort foods. Black Truffle & Cheese Grits Recipe
On Valentine’s Day, I woke up in a panic, realizing that I hadn’t planned anything for breakfast! Thankfully, I was the first one up, and quietly tip-toed out of bed, and around the squeaky floorboard to the kitchen. Still a bit groggy from a late night, I opened the fridge and welcomed the blast of sleep chasing cold air as it entered...

Rice Krispie Biscotti
I’ve been on a biscotti making kick lately, as you can tell. For some reason it’s the only thing I want to bake this year! I love that there’s so many varieties and flavor combinations you can do with biscotti. I saw these cute little Rice Krispie biscotti on the blog, Dinners for a Year and Beyond while wandering through the...

Wine shops in states with supermarket sales – three views
New York legislators are considering a shift to allow wine to be sold in supermarkets –and wine stores to sell gourmet cheese, cigars, beer and even have ATMs. To find out how small shops can even exist in such an environment, we turn to three “mom & pop” shops in three of the 35 states that currently allow such competition....

the definitive guide to salad – part 3 grains, nuts & seeds
If you think salad is all about leaves and dressing, prepare for your world to change for the better. rice I’m a big fan of brown short grain rice. Something about it’s subtle nuttiness and healthy connotations. In general I don’t cook rice frequently but with my latest supermarket discovery that may change. I’ve been experimenting...

Butternut Squash Lasagna, Revisited
I love this time of year it puts me in the mood for butternut squash lasagna. Have you tried it yet? If you haven’t, you must.
