My last couple of days in New Zealand are being spent with some friends in Auckland, The Hemingways. We knew them well in the UK, but a decade ago they moved out with their five children to live here. It has been great fun. Their kids are now, with the exception of one, teenagers and young adults, and there’s a real positive vibe in the house. Where they are living, some way out of the centre in west Auckland, is pretty and leafy. We’re just taking it easy, swapping stories, and drinking some nice wine and playing some guitar. Their son, Oscar, is a musical genius. He plays guitars and keys wonderfully, …

Just been on to amazon and ordered a book recommended to me by Ted Lemon, who was at Pinot Noir 2010. Ted’s wines are fantastic, and so anything he wants to put on my reading list is fine by me. It’s called ‘Agroecology’, by Miguel Altieri. Not cheap at £30, but I’m hoping it will be very good. On the flight on the way...
Arrived rather jetlagged in Queenstown at noon today, but I was shaken from my stupor by the view as we walked down the steps from the plane. Just remarkable: the best quality light you can imagine, and some incredibly raw, vivid mountains surrounding the town. I spent a couple of hours wandering around town and taking in some of the views. It’s...
If you were to visit our house right now, you’d be wondering if Christmas is really just a a week away. Oh, we have a small tree up in the living room but that’s about it. No present wrapped up underneath and a few of Christmas decorations here and there in the house. We have gifts almost all ready to go for everyone but we can’t...
Very excited to announce the second of the London Gastronomy Seminars. It’s titled From Plant to Cup: Flavour in Coffee and Wine , and it will be held at on 21st January at Senate House, University of London (hosted by the Centre for the Study of the Senses, Institute of Philosophy, School of Advanced Study). I’m the wine guy; coffee...
Gluten-free turkey meatballs with lime, carrots and scallion. First- a housekeeping issue. Keith P posed an interesting question in response to one of my blog posts from New Zealand. To paraphrase: does having a nice experience when visiting a wine region of country introduce a degree of positive bias in subsequent reviews? Let’s put this another way. Would it, in fact, be better for wine critics to have samples sent and taste the...
SPIT: controlled storage James, who has taken a couple of classes of mine in the past year, wrote that he recently pulled the cork on a 1974 Heitz, Martha’s Vineyard for his 50th birthday and it was drinking fabulously. I asked him when he got the wine and he replied, “It was stored in a number of different environments since I had...
A few weeks ago I mentioned my sordid past, I mean, my previous career as a wine maker . To be honest I don’t really miss my days treading on grapes and playing with yeast and barrels. Sure it was fun and I did get to work with some very talented and entertaining characters, but the truth is…. the best thing about wine is drinking...
It hit me while on the plane back to Charleston last week. I was fidgetting with excitement at the thought of seeing B. again soon. I did have a blast in L.A and Seattle but it would have been nice to share that with him. All the moments. On the moment. I just couldn’t wait to get home and tell him all about the week. I still need to sift...
A few months ago I wrote a pair of posts about setting up a minimalist kitchen: things to avoid and the essentials ( and the nice-to-haves). Following on from this, I thought I’d have a crack at pulling together a list of the essentials and the nice-to-haves for stocking a minimalist pantry . I’ve actually been thinking about this...
