Salad greens sold in bags or clamshell containers often boast on the label that they are “triple-washed” or at least “pre-washed,” but Consumer Reports says its tests have found “room for improvement .” No dangerous pathogens were found in the relatively small sample, but Consumer Reports says it did find “bacteria that are common indicators of poor sanitation and fecal contamination—in some cases, at rather high levels.” The federal government sets limits for such bacteria in water, milk, meat, and some processed foods, but not for produce.
