Watching Pollan Watch

January 19th, 2010 admin

A new blog, Pollan Watch , is anonymously written and apparently devoted to criticizing the de facto leader of the sustainable-food movement (or whatever it’s called), Michael Pollan . Unsigned though it is, the blog’s provenance might be guessed. Under “Important Links” are two corporate propaganda sites. One is ” Sweet Surprise ,” the campaign by the corn industry to provide disingenuous information about high-fructose corn syrup . The other is Best Food Facts , a site run by the Center …

Sweet Lies About Sugar
The funniest thing I’ve seen so far this week: Audrae Erickson, president of the Corn Refiners Association, telling the Wall Street Journal the other day that the mini-trend of food companies switching from high-fructose corn syrup to sugar is “nothing more than a marketing gimmick.” The Corn Refiners Association is little more...
Pollan’s New Rule to Ding Big Food
Pollan’s New Rule to Ding Big Food
One of Michael Pollan’s ” food rules ,” is—or, more accurately, was—to eat only foods that list five or fewer ingredients. But I came upon a video of a January bookstore appearance in which Pollan says, well, forget that rule. Why? Because of the “jiu-jitsu” employed by the food industry whenever someone offers...
Media Gets Stuck in High-Fructose Corn Syrup
Media Gets Stuck in High-Fructose Corn Syrup
I knew when I saw this Grist article on high-fructose corn syrup , and especially the Sunday Times article on which it is based , that something was amiss. Both articles take the findings of an academic study of fructose and proceed to go off the deep end, mischaracterizing the results as some kind of definitive proof of the evils of high-fructose...
Facebook Group Peddles High-Fructose Myths
Facebook Group Peddles High-Fructose Myths
The title of a fast-growing Facebook group calling for a ban on high-fructose corn syrup is written in all caps, which seems entirely appropriate, given both the extreme nature of the group’s stated goal and the YouTube-commenter level of its rhetoric. The “info” page for “THE BAN OF HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP IN THE U.S.”…  Read More →
Michael Pollan on the rise of the food movement(s)
Pollan nation: In what is ostensibly a five-book review for the June 10 New York Review of Books, journalist Michael Pollan has an epic essay charting the emergence and character of the food movement. Or, as he puts it, “‘movements,’ since it is unified as yet by little more than the recognition that industrial food production is...
High-Fructose Corn Syrup Comes Unstuck
High-Fructose Corn Syrup Comes Unstuck
Congratulations, opponents of high fructose corn syrup : Your campaign appears to be working. Sales of the sticky substance are down in the United States, and the industry acknowledges that all the bad publicity is to blame, despite strained efforts to counter it. Sales fell 11 percent between 2003 and 2008, the Associated Press reports. It seems...
Pollan Takes On Food Lit
Pollan Takes On Food Lit
Michael Pollan uses five books to frame a piece in the New York Review of Books that basically restates his usual set of arguments: We need to know more about where our food comes from, how it is made, and what effects it has on our health, the environment, and society in general. It’s worth a read if you want a wide-angle introduction to...

A Visual of Twinkie’s 37 Ingredients
You’re looking at the 37 ingredients that make up a Twinkie, photographed by Dwight Eschliman , who grew up in a vegan home but has since loosened up a bit. Try to match the ingredient list to the individual images! Enriched Bleached Wheat Flour [Flour, Reduced Iron, B Vitamins (Niacin, Thiamine Mononitrate (B1), Riboflavin (B2), Folic Acid)],...
The Limitations of Michael Pollan
The Limitations of Michael Pollan
Michael Pollan isn’t quite finished milking his “eat food” message for easy dollars. The omnipresent author of The Omnivore’s Dilemma began with that book, brilliantly describing the central conundrums of our cheap and efficient—but ultimately harmful—food system. He brought it all home with In Defense of Food , in...
