News of a bounced check from Vinfolio , the fine wine retailer and auctioneer, appeared yesterday morning on eBob . By the afternoon, the CEO, Steve Bachmann, posted this to his blog : After three years of very rapid growth — placing it among the top 15 fastest growing private companies in the SF Bay area from 2006 to 2008, Vinfolio experienced a much more difficult sales environment during 2009. SPIT: the wrong end In Wednesday’s post about wine closure preferences , some commenters expressed frustration about not being able to reinsert a synthetic cork back into an unfinished bottle. That reminded me that a winemaker once told me that if you do that with a regular cork, be sure to keep the same side facing down, since the top may...

Syrah: beyond the fruit bomb
While Merlot’s fall from grace can be traced to one line in the movie Sideways , the fall of Syrah has been more difficult to track. Australian wine, with Shiraz as the signature grape, has experienced a decline in sales over the past couple of years. Even more broadly, it’s still a tough sell: producers and retailers have repeatedly told...

Trading down in wine 2009 – did you do it? [poll]
Back in 2008, the prediction about 2009 was that wine consumers would opt for less expensive wine or stop drinking wine in favor of beer, vodka or shoju (actually, nobody said shoju). So now that the book is closed on 2009, how did your wine buying and consuming change, if at all? Did you deplete your existing stock? Only buy wines on closeout?...

McDonald’s Ditches Big ‘N’ Tasty
McDonald’s is planning some substantial changes to its menu , according to a company memo obtained by Crain’s Chicago Business . The biggest news is that the chain will drop its Big ‘N’ Tasty burger, which was introduced in 2001 to compete with Burger King ’s (BKC) Whopper. But the Big ‘N’ Tasty has been...

Harvard, USDA: Soda Tax Will Cut Obesity
It may take a year or two or five or twenty, but eventually some sort of levy will be placed on the liquid candy purveyed by the  beverage industry. In the past few weeks, two additional voices were heard in the argument for consumer (and legislator) mindshare on this issue. A Harvard experiment, in a hospital cafeteria, tried various intervention...

The New Ocean’s 11: Restaurants
When it’s in their interests, big companies will gladly sign on to efforts to save the environment. Good News: More Shoppers Abandoning Beverage Aisles
The past 2 years have seen a decline in the beverage category, 3.1% in 2009 and  2.1% in 2008, according to Beverage Marketing Corp . The worst hit products are “value-added waters”, or what we like to call “sugar-water with vitamins”. For example, Coca Cola’s Vitamin Water took a 13% hit. The sales of classic soda...
Brilliant Aussie Nebbiolo: Arrivo 2007
Really enjoying this wine. It’s an Australian Nebbiolo, produced by Peter Godden of the Australian Wine Research Institute, from grapes grown in the Adelaide Hills. Nebbiolo is a difficult variety that rarely performs well outside Piedmont in Italy, but Peter seems to have found the knack of working with it. As well as this wine, he also produces...

H.R. 5034: a threat to wine shipping
On April 15, a motley coalition of first-year and retiring members of Congress from both parties introduced a bill. The proposed legislation would restrict legal challenges to the interstate shipment of wine. Tom Wark, head of the Specialty Wine Retailers Association, described it as “the most onerous consumer wine law since the passage...
