Video: train ride in the Douro

January 16th, 2010 admin

A brief film of a train ride through the the spectacular Douro wine region in northern Portugal, ending up at Quinta de Vargellas, which is one of the properties owned by the Taylor Fladgate group. The train is an excellent way to travel in the Douro because the track runs along the river, whereas the road is less direct, and less scenic. You can take a train from Porto all the way to the Douro, changing at Regua (see the timetable at www.cp.pt ); here we started at Pinhao, in the heart of the wine

How far would you drive to taste some vintage port? That’s most often a rhetorical question but I actually confronted it head on last week as a rare vertical tasting including some legendary wines came on the agenda in Montreal. Since I tucked away some 2003 Fonseca from one son’s birth year, I thought this would at the very least...

Beef Bourguignon Recipe (video)
One of my goals with NoRecipes is to show you how to make restaurant quality meals that a person who works full time can make. This means taking shortcuts where it won’t be noticed while taking the “scenic route” where it counts. When it comes to stocks, I reserve homemade stock for dishes like clear soups, where the stock is...
Spar wines and back pain
I’m in pain today. Bad back. Came from nowhere, starting as stiffness in my hamstring a few days ago. Now I can hardly walk. I’m lying down on my bed, and I’m going to watch Silent Witness and drink wine. Still, I braved it into town this afternoon to taste through a range of wines from Spar with Laura Jewell MW who runs the operation....
New Zealand, day 5 – Martinborough/Wairarapa
Four very good visits today. Pictured above, Neil McCallum of Dry River, whose wines are just incredible. I met with him – an engaging, interesting host, and Poppy and Shayne Hammond (below), winemaker and viticulturalist, respectively. The team here is doing a fantastic job. The viticulture at Dry River is immaculate, with a split canopy system,...

Sugary Desserts to Lose Heart Check Symbol
The Heart Check Symbol – one of the first front-of-pack nutrition labels – was created by the American Heart Association in 1995. The idea was to give people a quick visual cue as to foods that were low in saturated fat and cholesterol. Unfortunately, the sugar count was not considered. And thus, ridiculously sweet and unhealthy foods...

Kit-Kat, Orang-utans, and a Facebook Revolt [Video][Inside the Label]
WARNING : The video below is a bit gross! There’s a revolt brewing on the web. What started as another Greenpeace ad aimed at stopping deforestation in southeast Asia, has turned into a PR disaster for Nestlé. Kit-Kat, one of the most beloved candy bars in the world is made with palm kernel oil. The oil is in such high demand that entire...

Video: Jamie Oliver on "Awful Reality" of Obesity
I was a little premature the other day in expressing my partial relief that Michelle Obama’s new initiative to reduce childhood obesity didn’t draw much backlash. Now it has. I expected the libertarian types to be the ones to lead the charge with yells of “nanny state” and whatnot. And while there has been some of that,...
Carob-Almond-Banana Smoothie
Almond milk smoothie with carob and banana. It’s the little things in life. So they say. And today I would agree- wholeheartedly, in fact, with every rebel piece of my dairy-free chocolate verboten heart. The heart that beats without the comfort of gluten, without the silky swirl of cream, without the sexy burn of Tapatio sauce and raw red onion....
