What do you want on a back label?

January 15th, 2010 admin

Yesterday’s post sparked a discussion about which words and/or information you really would like to have on a back label. While everyone can agree that pabulum (ahem, “ handcrafted “) should end up in the dump bucket rather than the back label, what would you like to see? A site reader sent in the above photo from New Zealand, which blends tech specs with some yadda yadda. Another small importer/distributor commented that half the people he asked actually wanted tasting notes …

Ambrosia? Yoplait’s New Greek Yogurt [Inside the Label]
Yoplait has a new Greek style yogurt out. There’s a massive marketing campaign tie in to the new Clash of the Titans movie and Athena portraying actress Izabella Miko . Strong woman eats good yogurt. Greek gods, Greek Yogurt, Yadda yadda… The yogurt pack prominently displays “2X Protein..of the leading yogurt”. Wonder what...
Is there an eco-certification premium but an eco-label discount?
Is there an eco-certification premium but an eco-label discount?
Why don’t green-minded vintners and vignerons always display their eco-friendly methods on the label? I’ve often asked why and replies generally come in the form of the producer’s desire to have the wine liked for the quality as opposed to the methodology per se. Or, where organic in spirit, a common reply has been a dislike...

Riesling buzz, grower Champagne, 2009, nude breakfast – Terry Theise
Is Riesling a hard sell? Has the bubble burst on his Champagnes made by those who grow the grapes? Just how good is 2009? On Tuesday, I pulled wine importer Terry Theise aside at the trade tasting of his New York distributor, Michael Skurnik Wines . We discussed these topics–and more. To the tape! 2009—great vintage or the greatest vintage?...

Visiting Mayacamas Vineyards, Napa Valley [guest post]
Evan Dawson, who writes about Finger Lakes wines for the New York Cork Report (and who we last saw here ), recently tweeted that he was in Napa. I asked him if he wanted to contribute a post from his travels and he suggested his stop at Mayacamas Vineyards. Today we have his thoughts. Tomorrow, John Gilman offers his tasting notes on several decades’...

Why Does Ovaltine Have Artifical Yellow, Red & Blue Colorings? [Inside the Label]
We’ve been blogging recently about c hocolate milk .  One of our readers commented with a question about Ovaltine as an option to sweeten milk . Ovaltine is a milk flavoring invented in Switzerland more than a hundred years ago. The original formula contained eggs, malt, and a bit of cocoa. It then reached the UK and eventually the US,...
Back label watch: “handcrafted”
Back label watch: “handcrafted”
Usage of the term “handcrafted” on wine back labels is increasing. In related news, the space for “machine crafted” on labels remains wide open. Nonsensical label words: TERMINATED.  Read More →

Earth, wind and fire: tasting the terroir, Sonoma, 2008
I had heard about the fires in Sonoma 2008. But I had never tasted them. David Hirsch poured me a sample of his 2008 “The Bohans-Dillon” pinot noir at the recent trade tasting of his New York distributor. And guess what: it had a smoky notes swirling around the dark cherry fruit. If you like chipotle or a peaty whisky, and you like...

Time to belly up to the barcode? [scanners]
You just brought home a mixed case of wine from the store. Already, things are looking good. But what if you could scan each bottle as you unpack it and have the information appear in a database for managing your inventory? Or just for keeping all your tasting notes handy and organized? To find out if it’s time for wine lovers to belly up...
Pinot Noir 2010, day two
The theme today? Sustainability, and all that goes with it. I gave my talk, in a session that included Steve Smith, Doug Bell (Wholefoods), Andrew Jefford, Nick Mills and Max Allen. I thought it went OK, although I did have a little too much information for a 15 minute presentation, and to avoid over-running had to do some jettisoning of the later...
Pinot Noir 2010, day one
So Pinot 2010 is now in full flow. The event opened by a welcome from New Zealand PM John Key ( top ). Pretty cool that the PM should open a wine conference – can’t see it happening in the UK! He has a good vintage, too – 1961. Seems like a smart guy with a great common touch and his speech was perfectly judged. Today’s proceedings...
