Spar wines and back pain

January 14th, 2010 admin

I’m in pain today. Bad back. Came from nowhere, starting as stiffness in my hamstring a few days ago. Now I can hardly walk. I’m lying down on my bed, and I’m going to watch Silent Witness and drink wine. Still, I braved it into town this afternoon to taste through a range of wines from Spar with Laura Jewell MW who runs the operation. Spar have some 2600 branches, and so they’re a very important wine retailer. We tasted through…

Tesco announce the world’s lightest glass bottle: so what does it look like?
This probably won’t be terribly relevant to the majority of wines featured on this blog, but the UK’s largest wine retailer Tesco have just announced a new 300 g glass bottle, the lightest yet. It’s the result of a project in collaboration with WRAP , Kingsland Wine and Spirits (the UK bottler Tesco use), and Quinn Glass. “Tesco...

Le Tour: wine “to dull the physical pain”
When Fabian Cancellara crossed the line first in the short prologue of the Tour de France, his bike was impounded and put through an X-ray machine. So were 13 others. Apparently authorities are suspicious of tiny motors assisting riders in the Tour. None were found. An article detailing the day’s events appeared in the NYT . In it, they...
Tasting the hand and the land at Hirsch Vineyards
Tasting the hand and the land at Hirsch Vineyards
Ten years ago, vineyard owner David Hirsch of Sonoma brought some of his wines to New York. Wine & Spirits magazine assembled a group of leading sommeliers, tasted the wines and Rod Smith wrote a story about it. A couple of weeks ago, the magazine assembled another group with David Hirsch to taste some of his 2007s–as well as some of...
Sarah Ahmed’s 50 Great Portuguese Wines
Just on my way back from Sarah Ahmed’s 50 Great Portuguese Wines tasting. Having done this job last year, I know how difficult it is to narrow down this selection to just 50: Portugal must be the most underrated wine-producing country on the planet. Sarah is pictured above, with one of her favourite whites. Sarah’s selection was excellent....
In Queenstown – a beautiful place
Arrived rather jetlagged in Queenstown at noon today, but I was shaken from my stupor by the view as we walked down the steps from the plane. Just remarkable: the best quality light you can imagine, and some incredibly raw, vivid mountains surrounding the town. I spent a couple of hours wandering around town and taking in some of the views. It’s...

The chocofight 2010! Pairing wine and chocolate – pleasure or pain?
Valentine’s Day is rapidly approaching. It has reignited the annual hot debate in anticipation of the hot date: should you pair wine and chocolate? Consider this exchange. Paul Grieco, owner of Hearth restaurant and Terroir wine bar in NYC, tweeted that he was going on the TODAY show to talk wine and chocolate. (See segment here : both regular...
Does having a nice experience of a country bias writers, even subtly?
Keith P posed an interesting question in response to one of my blog posts from New Zealand. To paraphrase: does having a nice experience when visiting a wine region of country introduce a degree of positive bias in subsequent reviews? Let’s put this another way. Would it, in fact, be better for wine critics to have samples sent and taste the...
A very important wine: 1999 AWRI Trial Semillon
Really pleased to get a chance to try this wine, because it’s an important one. It’s the Clare Valley Semillon 1999, made by Kerri Thompson at Leasingham, which was the wine used in the now famous Australian Wine Research Institute Closures Trial. In this trial, the same wine was bottled using fourteen different closures, including this...

Astor Wines says no to Styro, yes to plastic sleeves
I got a few wines from Astor Wine & Spirits in Greenwich Village via UPS the other day. When I opened the box, there was no Styrofoam. There weren’t any cardboard inserts. Instead, each bottle was wrapped in an inflatable plastic sleeve. It was the first time I’d seen this. Styrofoam is popular with retailers and wineries shipping...
