  Horse Meat Bill Advances in Missour...
  Video file date is: March 30, 2010 "JEFFERSON CITY Missouri lawmakers are working on legislation now that would help make Missouri a producer of horse meat for human consumption overseas. The Missouri house passed a bill Monday to pay for federal inspections of the meat. The bill is at the center of a debate between commercial horse breeders and animal rights activists. "My passion are the horses but my knowledge is telling me that we need a place to take these horses," said Jim Dudley, a professional horse breeder. As a member of the American Quarter Horse Association, Dudley thinks the bill is what the horse industry needs. The bill has passed the house and now needs a final vote from the senate. Representatives are already talking with senators and are expecting quick passage. Since 2006, some house members have been looking for a way to pay the US Department of Agriculture to inspect horse meat in Missouri. If the bill passes, federal inspections will allow Missouri horse meat producers to sell their meat commercially, mostly to Asia and Europe. "This is a huge economic driver for our state, our economic development tool. We are going to put people back to work and to work in these plants and there will be owners in these plants," said Representative Jim Viebrock. Opposition to the bill is coming from animal rights groups. The Humane Society of Missouri said by phone it opposes legalizing horse slaughter in the state.
