Does the Wine Advocate buy over $700,000 worth of wine a year?

January 11th, 2010 admin

Robert Parker states that his publication, The Wine Advocate, purchases “more than 60%” of the wines that it reviews. Parker previously said that he paid for 75 percent of the wines, but amid the furor last year over the free trips that two of his contributors, Jay Miller and Mark Squires, had accepted, he scaled back that figure. However, many people wonder if even the revised figure is true. After all, The Wine Advocate reviews thousands…

The wine world just got wackier. A new Twitter account going by the name of Bobby Parkerchuk mashes the tweets and tones of Robert Parker and Gary Vaynerchuk . The bio reads: “Wine guy, hedonist, host of Winery Advocate TV. Loves points. Loves the hustle.” Parkerchuk has been hailed as “hilarious,” “my new god,”...
Does having a nice experience of a country bias writers, even subtly?
Keith P posed an interesting question in response to one of my blog posts from New Zealand. To paraphrase: does having a nice experience when visiting a wine region of country introduce a degree of positive bias in subsequent reviews? Let’s put this another way. Would it, in fact, be better for wine critics to have samples sent and taste the...

Is Hello Kitty wine the Joe Camel of wine? [poll]
In a collision of two of the last decade’s most absurd wine trends, celebrity wines and critter labels collide in the form of a new Hello Kitty line of wines. Is this wine targeting minors, adding fuel to the fire of distributors who play the underage drinking card in the direct shipping debate? The wine’s marketer told LA Weekly :...

Champagne, Champagne values, Bordeaux, solitude – sipped and spit
SIPPED: upgrading label info? No disgorgement date, no review: Antonio Galloni, who reviews Champagnes for The Wine Advocate, announced in issue 186 that if nonvintage Champagne doesn’t come with a disgorgement date, then it will not be reviewed. (Discussion ensued over at wineberserkers whether there was a loophole in the statement.) With...

Bordeaux 2009: all over but the pricing
Robert Parker posted his reviews of Bordeaux 2009 yesterday on his subscription web site. In an article entitled “Once Upon a Time (1899, 1929, 1949, 1959, 2009),” he lavished praise on the vintage, particularly the cabernet blends of the left bank, and on many wines individually: 21 wines received scores of potentially 100 points....
Opening wine with a shoe–is a Croc
Various notes have come to the Dr. Vino World Headquarters recently: “Is it possible?;” “I am expecting some dr. vino independent trials;” and “Hilarious, can it be done?” Of course, they are all referring to the most discussed wine topic of the day–not Bordeaux 2009 futures, not even natural wine–but...

H.R. 5034: a threat to wine shipping
On April 15, a motley coalition of first-year and retiring members of Congress from both parties introduced a bill. The proposed legislation would restrict legal challenges to the interstate shipment of wine. Tom Wark, head of the Specialty Wine Retailers Association, described it as “the most onerous consumer wine law since the passage...

When small wine shops are great–and when they disappoint
Eric Asimov has a long piece in today’s NYT about small wine shops . He highlights a number of local, independent shops mostly around New York City. If you are familiar with our map of NYC wine shops , then you knew about virtually every store in his story already! I’d also highlight Le Vigne , which is a good, new shop that didn’t...
