Brilliant Aussie Nebbiolo: Arrivo 2007

January 11th, 2010 admin

Really enjoying this wine. It’s an Australian Nebbiolo, produced by Peter Godden of the Australian Wine Research Institute, from grapes grown in the Adelaide Hills. Nebbiolo is a difficult variety that rarely performs well outside Piedmont in Italy, but Peter seems to have found the knack of working with it. As well as this wine, he also produces a rose, and a high-end bottling called Lunga Macerazione (the 2006 version of this was one of the wines in the Landmark Tutorial – it was fantastic – and I have another bottle of this in …

Beautifully elegant Aussie: De Bortoli Shiraz Viognier 2004
I have a few bottles of this lurking around, purchased a few years ago for around a tenner a bottle. It’s just beautiful, and at five years old is starting to hit its stride, but clearly has some distance to go. De Bortoli Shiraz Viognier 2004 Yarra Valley, Australia 14% alcohol. 11 months ageing in new and used French oak barrels. This is...
Tesco announce the world’s lightest glass bottle: so what does it look like?
This probably won’t be terribly relevant to the majority of wines featured on this blog, but the UK’s largest wine retailer Tesco have just announced a new 300 g glass bottle, the lightest yet. It’s the result of a project in collaboration with WRAP , Kingsland Wine and Spirits (the UK bottler Tesco use), and Quinn Glass. “Tesco...
A very important wine: 1999 AWRI Trial Semillon
Really pleased to get a chance to try this wine, because it’s an important one. It’s the Clare Valley Semillon 1999, made by Kerri Thompson at Leasingham, which was the wine used in the now famous Australian Wine Research Institute Closures Trial. In this trial, the same wine was bottled using fourteen different closures, including this...

Bar Henry lets you split things up – and Sommelier Journal
Have you ever looked at a wine list and wished that you might want to try a half a bottle of one wine and a half a bottle of another wine? At Bar Henry, that dream can become reality. John Slover, who previously worked at Cru, has assembled a wine list with 116 wines on the “market” list. Order any wine off this list and they will...
Bottled water’s energy budget
In a short research paper, two staff members from the Pacific Institute examine how energy is used in the production and distribution of bottled water. Bottle production and transportation are by far the largest energy users, with pre-bottling water processing (filtration and disinfection), filling and sealing the bottles, and chilling the water...

Rosé 2009s: Clos Roche Blanche, Peyrassol, and brightness
It’s sunny with a high of 86 today in New York. Although rosé is food-friendly and refreshing for more months than it is usually given credit for, today is classic rosé weather. I’ve got a couple of good rosés so now all I need is a pool… Last week I stopped by Crush Wine & Spirits on 57th St ( map it ). They used to...
“Quickly emptied:” Rating wine on a drinkability scale
“Quickly emptied:” Rating wine on a drinkability scale
After surveying several dozen choices last night in my basement last night–too cool an evening for a rosé, never enough Pinot around–I settled on the 2008 D. Coquelet, “vieilles vignes” from the often-overlooked appellation of Chiroubles. Still in his twenties, Damien Coquelet is both the stepson of Georges Descombes,...
Films and books and stuff
Just been on to amazon and ordered a book recommended to me by Ted Lemon, who was at Pinot Noir 2010. Ted’s wines are fantastic, and so anything he wants to put on my reading list is fine by me. It’s called ‘Agroecology’, by Miguel Altieri. Not cheap at £30, but I’m hoping it will be very good. On the flight on the way...
We’ll drink to that: Open That Bottle Night 11, Saturday, February 27
The idea behind Open That Bottle Night is a simple one. Time to belly up to the barcode? [scanners]
You just brought home a mixed case of wine from the store. Already, things are looking good. But what if you could scan each bottle as you unpack it and have the information appear in a database for managing your inventory? Or just for keeping all your tasting notes handy and organized? To find out if it’s time for wine lovers to belly up...
