Dude, what have they done to your labels? Flagstone’s disaster

January 10th, 2010 admin

Bruce Jack of Flagstone is one of my favourite South African winemakers. He’s very smart, makes good wine and there’s a lovely warmth to his character. You can’t help but like him. In October 2007 I reported how he’d (unexpectdely) sold his winery to drinks giant Constellation . Visiting him in November last year I found that the Flagstone wines were as good as ever, but the one deeply regrettable change that Constellation had made was in the packaging. Jack’s labels used to be wonderful (see picture above which shows some of them on the wall

This is a guest blog-post by  Professor Timothy D. Regulating Front-of-Package Nutrition Labels, Part 3 of 3: Objections to the Imposition of a Single FDA Scheme
This is a guest blog-post by  Professor Timothy D. Lytton In my previous posts I have proposed that the FDA regulate front-of-package nutrition labels by better enforcement of existing regulations and by setting minimum standards for labels that rate the overall nutritional value of foods. By contrast, the Center for Science and the Public Interest...

Ruling Averts Disaster for Sugar Market
A potential catastrophe for the U.S. sugar market was averted on Tuesday, thanks to a federal judge’s refusal to ban this year’s harvest of genetically modified sugar beets . GMO beets make up 95 percent of the crop, and sugar beets provide half the nation’s sugar. But U.S. District Judge Jeffrey S. White in San Francisco said...

Does having a nice experience of a country bias writers, even subtly?
Keith P posed an interesting question in response to one of my blog posts from New Zealand. To paraphrase: does having a nice experience when visiting a wine region of country introduce a degree of positive bias in subsequent reviews? Let’s put this another way. Would it, in fact, be better for wine critics to have samples sent and taste the...

Talking PET, Paks, & pouches with Dave Pearce of Grove Mill
Dave Pearce crunches carbon numbers for breakfast. The kiwi winemaker at Grove Mill winery has studied the carbon footprint of wine, reduced what emissions he can at his winery, and purchased offsets for the rest. We sat down over a macchiato in NYC one morning and discussed his views on alternative packaging. Although he recognizes the weight...
New Zealand, day 6: Syrah Symposium
A bit of a change. After visiting beautiful vineyards, I’ve been stuck in a room all day. But productively. It has been the Syrah Symposium here in Hawkes Bay. A mixture of science, tasting and opinion. A tight schedule, running from 8 am until 6 pm, with four excellent tasting sessions blended in with the talks. The first, led by the excellent...
