Not eating today. I’m feeling ill – both ends affected. Most unpleasant. We had an awesome new year’s party round at friends last night, but although a reasonable amount of booze was consumer, it wasn’t anywhere enough to explain my symptoms. Must be microbial. So no food, and no wine. Just a bit of coke to drink, because I remember hearing somewhere that in the absence of rehydration therapy, coke works quite well because of its high sugar content. Could be wrong about that. I’ve been incredibly lazy and spent the first part of the day in bed…

With a particular flavor you either love or you hate, Dr Pepper has been around for as long as Coca Cola. Actually, one year longer – since 1885. Although it never reached the heights of Coke’s success, Dr Pepper is a very popular soft drink, mostly in the US. At 7 teaspoons of sugar per cup, though, it is nutritionally equivalent...
Last week NPR held an interesting debate about the taxing of sugary soft drinks. Representing the Cokes and Pepsis of the world was Maureen Storey of the American Beverage Association . In her words: Soda is comprised mostly of water. A full-calorie soft drink has 90 percent water, and a diet soft drink is 99 percent water. Water is the most important...
Last day of Pinot Noir 2010. I’m feeling tired – you have to remember that this is not an academic symposium. It’s largely about eating, drinking, meeting people, having fun and generally partying. I was out last night with a small group of winemakers and journalists for a fun party hosted in someone’s home. We drank some beautiful...
In a move that continues the soft-drink industry’s consolidation of its supply chains and distribution networks, Coca-Cola on Thursday announced that it would buy most of its biggest bottler , Coca-Cola Enterprises , in a deal worth about $15 billion, including the assumption of debt. Coke is buying CCE’s North American operations,...
In an aside in his radio report, KQED’s Cyrus Musiker notes that “Anheuser Busch used to sell wine on tap in the 1970s, and it wasn’t very good.” No shock, that. The 1970s were all about bad wine. Remember Lancer’s? Annie Green Springs? You can’t blame A-B for trying to popularize wine on tap back then, since...
It hit me the other day at the store that it was taking me longer and longer each year to remember a few French words. Primarily because they were already rarely part of my vocabulary but I realize that they are as much fun to remember as they are for Bill to pronounce and learn. In the spirit of sharing and remembering, practicing and growing...
Arrived rather jetlagged in Queenstown at noon today, but I was shaken from my stupor by the view as we walked down the steps from the plane. Just remarkable: the best quality light you can imagine, and some incredibly raw, vivid mountains surrounding the town. I spent a couple of hours wandering around town and taking in some of the views. It’s...
When you’re thirsty for something sweet and tasty, yet don’t want to drink an unhealthy cola, do you reach out for an iced tea drink? Do you placate your conscience by reading the label promising you improved well-being and exotic extracts? Does the fact that it’s made with “natural” sugar instead high fructose corn...
Valentine’s Day is rapidly approaching. It has reignited the annual hot debate in anticipation of the hot date: should you pair wine and chocolate? Consider this exchange. Paul Grieco, owner of Hearth restaurant and Terroir wine bar in NYC, tweeted that he was going on the TODAY show to talk wine and chocolate. (See segment here : both regular...
