Lots of Champagne and a nice Port with family

December 31st, 2009 admin

Had a brilliant time last night with my family, over at my sister Hester’s place in Gerrards Cross. All four siblings plus parents were gathered for the first time in ages. B-in-law William and I filmed a blind Champagne tasting, which I’ll be posting later. We gathered some high end Champagnes, a couple of lesser known grower Champagnes, and a sparkling wine ringer, and had them presented to us blind to assess without sight of the label. The list included Bollinger, Krug, Belle Epoque 1999, Ruinart, Duval Leroy 2004, Legras BdB GC, Marc Chauvet Brut Selection and Pelorus 2005. The results surprised us! Then we drank them all. After dinner, we had a couple of halves of Sandemans …

Video: the new year blind Champagne tasting
Here I taste Champagnes blind with brother-in-law William Beavington. Will Krug and Bollinger triumph over much cheaper growers’ Champagnes when the label isn’t in view? [And there's a nice family new year's toast at the end!]  Read More →
Does having a nice experience of a country bias writers, even subtly?
Keith P posed an interesting question in response to one of my blog posts from New Zealand. To paraphrase: does having a nice experience when visiting a wine region of country introduce a degree of positive bias in subsequent reviews? Let’s put this another way. Would it, in fact, be better for wine critics to have samples sent and taste the...

Champagne, Champagne values, Bordeaux, solitude – sipped and spit
SIPPED: upgrading label info? No disgorgement date, no review: Antonio Galloni, who reviews Champagnes for The Wine Advocate, announced in issue 186 that if nonvintage Champagne doesn’t come with a disgorgement date, then it will not be reviewed. (Discussion ensued over at wineberserkers whether there was a loophole in the statement.) With...
Champagne for non-hipsters: what would you pour?
Champagne for non-hipsters: what would you pour?
If you were invited to a sumptuous dinner at your friend’s boss’ house and had to bring the bubbly, would you bring a grower champagne or a better-known label? That was a question I confronted head-on last week. Grower champagnes are a great story, since the wines are made in limited quantities by those who grow the grapes, not the...
Riesling buzz, grower Champagne, 2009, nude breakfast – Terry Theise
Riesling buzz, grower Champagne, 2009, nude breakfast – Terry Theise
Is Riesling a hard sell? Has the bubble burst on his Champagnes made by those who grow the grapes? Just how good is 2009? On Tuesday, I pulled wine importer Terry Theise aside at the trade tasting of his New York distributor, Michael Skurnik Wines . We discussed these topics–and more. To the tape! 2009—great vintage or the greatest vintage?...

how to setup a minimalist kitchen part 2 – the essentials & the nice-to-haves
If you missed it, last week in part 1 , I aired my minimalist kitchen dirty laundry and came clean about the lack of minimalism in some areas of my cooking equipment. This week I thought I’d go through the minimalist kitchen essentials – what I’d invest in if I was kitting out a kitchen from scratch. This is just my personal...
Divers find old champagne and immediately chug it
Divers find old champagne and immediately chug it
Nordic divers have found a cache of old champagne bottles on a shipwreck in the Baltic Sea. Christian Ekstrom (pictured above via BBC ) and his dive partners could not contain their enthusiasm at finding the intact bottles that may date from the late 18th century. So they brought one to the surface, uncorked it, and had a swig. Which statement...
Champagne grapes don’t make Champagne [reader mail]
Champagne grapes don’t make Champagne [reader mail]
Dear Dr. Vino, I just discovered that champagne grapes are really tasty. I bet they would pair well with champagne… Do they make Champagne or is that a marketing thing? Paul It’s a marketing thing. Those sweet, pea-sized grapes that usually appear as a garnish (or in soft focus on greeting cards next to cheese and a glass of  Read More →
Pinot Noir 2010, day two
The theme today? Sustainability, and all that goes with it. I gave my talk, in a session that included Steve Smith, Doug Bell (Wholefoods), Andrew Jefford, Nick Mills and Max Allen. I thought it went OK, although I did have a little too much information for a 15 minute presentation, and to avoid over-running had to do some jettisoning of the later...

Vintage port: 1948 Taylor, 1945 Fonseca, 1927 Niepoort
How far would you drive to taste some vintage port? That’s most often a rhetorical question but I actually confronted it head on last week as a rare vertical tasting including some legendary wines came on the agenda in Montreal. Since I tucked away some 2003 Fonseca from one son’s birth year, I thought this would at the very least...
