Making Weed While the Sun Shines

December 28th, 2009 admin

California’s wine country has seen a rash of thefts of solar panels from vineyards recently, giving rise to a mini-industry of vineyard security systems . It makes sense. Thefts of scrap metal—the usual market for rural thieves—are way down thanks to falling prices. And solar panels are proliferating in vineyards, usually installed in remote (but easily accessible) locations. There is another factor at work: Wine is legal, but marijuana isn’t. That means criminals are running the massive marijuana-growing operations north of wine country, while legitimate businesspeople are …

Starbucks Busts Out Seattle’s Best
Starbucks Busts Out Seattle’s Best
Starbucks (SBUX) is going full-out in its expansion of its second-tier brand, Seattle’s Best coffee . The chain plans to increase the number of locations tenfold by the end of the year to about 30,000. About half of those will be Burger King (BKC) and Subway locations, as well as AMC Theaters. The rest will be new franchise locations. Such...
Striking Provencal red: Domaine Hauvette
This is an interesting wine. It’s one that will divide people, depending on their tolerance for and acceptance of Brettanomyces (the ’spoilage’ yeast that’s relatively common in red wines, and which contibutes an earthy, spicy, medicinal, animally quality). Now I’m not a Brett policeman. If I was a winemaker, I’d...
Paul Draper’s forty years and the making of Ridge Monte Bello
Paul Draper’s forty years and the making of Ridge Monte Bello
Paul Draper is, without question, one of the world’s great winemakers. Even though he has every reason to be an egotistical blowhard, he remains humble and democratic in spirit, asking sincere questions of those around him and quick to point to his team as the reason for the winery’s success. It may sound absurd to think that a winemaker’s...
Does having a nice experience of a country bias writers, even subtly?
Keith P posed an interesting question in response to one of my blog posts from New Zealand. To paraphrase: does having a nice experience when visiting a wine region of country introduce a degree of positive bias in subsequent reviews? Let’s put this another way. Would it, in fact, be better for wine critics to have samples sent and taste the...

Today, Trader Joe’s launches a value wine that riffs on history. The grocery store chain that brought the world Two Buck Chuck is debuting a wine in a weather-beaten bottle bearing the initials Th. J. and a $9.99 price tag. Various wine blobbers have dubbed it “ten buck Tom” after trying samples. Trader Joe’s is also colloquially...

In a move that continues the soft-drink industry’s consolidation of its supply chains and distribution networks, Coca-Cola on Thursday announced that it would buy most of its biggest bottler , Coca-Cola Enterprises , in a deal worth about $15 billion, including the assumption of debt. Coke is buying CCE’s North American operations,...
New Zealand, day 6: Syrah Symposium
A bit of a change. After visiting beautiful vineyards, I’ve been stuck in a room all day. But productively. It has been the Syrah Symposium here in Hawkes Bay. A mixture of science, tasting and opinion. A tight schedule, running from 8 am until 6 pm, with four excellent tasting sessions blended in with the talks. The first, led by the excellent...
Coenobium – a hard to pronounce wine made by nuns
Coenobium – a hard to pronounce wine made by nuns
“Pass some more of the nun wine.” I overheard someone say that at the other end of my table recently. Not Blue Nun , mind you. But a wine actually made by nuns! Since the Trappist monks in Belgium still make (and market) Chimay beer, I was pleased to discover that Trappist (Cistercian) nuns still make wine in Lazio, a little to the...
