December 28th, 2009 admin

California’s wine country has seen a rash of thefts of solar panels from vineyards recently, giving rise to a mini-industry of vineyard security systems . It makes sense. Thefts of scrap metal—the usual market for rural thieves—are way down thanks to falling prices. And solar panels are proliferating in vineyards, usually installed in remote (but easily accessible) locations. There is another factor at work: Wine is legal, but marijuana isn’t. Striking Provencal red: Domaine Hauvette
This is an interesting wine. It’s one that will divide people, depending on their tolerance for and acceptance of Brettanomyces (the ’spoilage’ yeast that’s relatively common in red wines, and which contibutes an earthy, spicy, medicinal, animally quality). Now I’m not a Brett policeman. If I was a winemaker, I’d...

Paul Draper’s forty years and the making of Ridge Monte Bello
Paul Draper is, without question, one of the world’s great winemakers. Even though he has every reason to be an egotistical blowhard, he remains humble and democratic in spirit, asking sincere questions of those around him and quick to point to his team as the reason for the winery’s success. It may sound absurd to think that a winemaker’s...
Does having a nice experience of a country bias writers, even subtly?
Keith P posed an interesting question in response to one of my blog posts from New Zealand. To paraphrase: does having a nice experience when visiting a wine region of country introduce a degree of positive bias in subsequent reviews? Let’s put this another way. Would it, in fact, be better for wine critics to have samples sent and taste the...
Coke Bottles Up
Coke Bottles Up
In a move that continues the soft-drink industry’s consolidation of its supply chains and distribution networks, Coca-Cola on Thursday announced that it would buy most of its biggest bottler , Coca-Cola Enterprises , in a deal worth about $15 billion, including the assumption of debt. Coke is buying CCE’s North American operations,...

Tragedy struck Chile overnight on Friday in the form of a massive earthquake that has displaced two million people, severed north-south bridges in the narrow country, and killed hundreds of people (see coverage on nytimes.com) . Chile has a large, export-oriented wine industry. Some of infrastructure, particularly in the regions of Maule and Rapel...

Could the Biggest Losers be Buyers of Jillian Michaels’ Diet Pills?
If there’s one key takeaway from the hit reality show “The Biggest Loser”, is that losing weight takes a lot of hard work. People need to readjust their entire life, both mentally, physically, and for some spiritually as well. A key success factor for the show’s contestants is trainer Jillian Michaels, who should should...
New Zealand, day 6: Syrah Symposium
A bit of a change. After visiting beautiful vineyards, I’ve been stuck in a room all day. But productively. It has been the Syrah Symposium here in Hawkes Bay. A mixture of science, tasting and opinion. A tight schedule, running from 8 am until 6 pm, with four excellent tasting sessions blended in with the talks. The first, led by the excellent...
Pinot Noir 2010, day one
So Pinot 2010 is now in full flow. The event opened by a welcome from New Zealand PM John Key ( top ). Pretty cool that the PM should open a wine conference – can’t see it happening in the UK! He has a good vintage, too – 1961. Seems like a smart guy with a great common touch and his speech was perfectly judged. Today’s proceedings...
