How Much of Your Food Dollar Goes to Farmers?
As if you needed more reasons to buy fresh produce: If a bunch of carrots cost you $1.98, the farmer who grew them gets 82 cents, or 41 percent. Compare that with a box of cereal that costs $5.09. The farmer in that case gets 7 cents, or just 1.4 percent. Of course, the more a company processes a food, the farther it has to travel. And the more...

Backyard Veggies for Fun and Profit (The Farmer’s Garden Story)
This is a guest post by  Maureen Farmer . Five years ago, I tried vegetable gardening in one 3 by 6 raised bed to save money, eat healthier and become more self-sufficient. I was so thrilled with the outcome that the next year I enrolled in the Connecticut Master Gardener program. I discovered that I had a passion for growing vegetables and wanted...
Richmond has a farmers market on wheels
The meals on the bus go round and round : In Richmond, Virginia, Mark Lilly has transformed a 1987 diesel school bus into a mobile produce market called Farm to Family, which also has a CSA program. Some Farmers Have Funny Math
Some Farmers Have Funny Math
Trade magazines often offer the best place to see what people involved in food production really think. For example, in this article from AgriNews about the “wants and wishes” of various constituencies for the 2012 Farm Bill, there’s a lot of anti-Obama, small-government rhetoric, including from farmers and politicians who want...

As...

Ruling Averts Disaster for Sugar Market
A potential catastrophe for the U.S. sugar market was averted on Tuesday, thanks to a federal judge’s refusal to ban this year’s harvest of genetically modified sugar beets . GMO beets make up 95 percent of the crop, and sugar beets provide half the nation’s sugar. But U.S. District Judge Jeffrey S. White in San Francisco said...

What the Heck Is Organic-Plus?
“Organic-plus” doesn’t mean “super organic,” despite what some of its practitioners would have you believe. The Associated Press reports that “a growing number of farmers” are using organic-plus, or biodynamic, growing techniques . As the AP describes it, biodynamic farming ” views land as a self-contained...
