Prisoners Getting Too Much Soy?

December 21st, 2009 admin

Inmates at the Danville Correctional Center in Illinois are being fed dangerously large amounts of soy , according to a lawsuit financed by the Weston A. Price Foundation , which advocates a soy-free diet , among other sometimes counterintuitive ideas. The foundation alleges that inmates are fed soy as a cost-saving measure by the Illinois Department of Corrections, and that they are consuming up to four times the recommended daily amount. The foundation’s president called the soy-based diet “the Tuskegee of the 21st century,” a reference to the syphilis experiments on African-Americans in the last century. That might not be mere hyperbole, depending on the inmate, and the amount of soy consumed. Lots of people are allergic or sensitive to soy. Too much of it can cause severe gastrointestinal distress, thyroid problems, or cardiovascular…

Children of the teosinte :  Even though maize ( Zea mays ) is perhaps the most important crop in the Americas (for better or worse), until recently, we didn’t know where it came from and when it was domesticated. Research by botanists, geneticists and archeologists has finally found the answers in a grass called teosinte, a river valley in...
Starbucks Drops the Stealth
Starbucks Drops the Stealth
Starbucks’ experiments with “stealth” stores—outlets that look much different from regular Starbucks and are called by different names—have been a success, the company says. So the chain will continue creating unique versions of itself. But from now on, they’ll all be called Starbucks , the Seattle Times reports. In...
‘Revolution’ off to contentious and hopeful start
‘Revolution’ off to contentious and hopeful start
The ABC preview of ” Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution ” Sunday night has me modestly hopeful that ordinary Americans — those largely untouched by the movement to improve diet and agriculture — might watch and learn. “Revolution” puts reality TV’s conflict-based formula to work by sending celebrity chef Oliver to Huntingon, West...

The Government’s Hand on Your Salt Shaker
The Washington Post is reporting the Food and Drug Administration has created an “unprecedented” plan to set limits on the amount of salt foods are allowed contain . The limits would be phased in over a decade “to adjust the American palate to a less salty diet,” according to the Post . On Wednesday, the Institute of Medicine...
South Africa’s strong performance in the UK
Just got these latest stats through on the performance of South Africa in the UK market. Quite amazing really, especially seeing as South Africa has the handicap of significant vineyard area being wasted by means of being planted to Pinotage. [That last sentence was intended as a wind up.] South African wine achieved the largest increase in UK market...
Some Farmers Have Funny Math
Some Farmers Have Funny Math
Trade magazines often offer the best place to see what people involved in food production really think. For example, in this article from AgriNews about the “wants and wishes” of various constituencies for the 2012 Farm Bill, there’s a lot of anti-Obama, small-government rhetoric, including from farmers and politicians who want...

Memo to Lobbyist: Soda Is Not the Same as Water
Last week, I made fun of an inane set of commercials from an outfit called Americans Against Food Taxes (the “Americans” in this case being giant soda makers and grocers). My attention was drawn there by a two-part report by NPR on proposals to enact taxes on soda and juice drinks . The commercials are funny because they equate “food”...

Introducing CerealScan™ – Iphone App for Choosing Healthier Cereal
Cereal has become, in just over a century, the quintessential American breakfast. Tens of millions of people start their day with a bowl of flakes, puffs, or crisps poured from a cardboard box . There are over 1000 different cold cereal products one can choose from, and any given supermarket dedicates an entire aisle to these. Last year, Americans...
Pendock: stirring up trouble on Pinotage
Pendock: stirring up trouble on Pinotage
Slightly confused by a recent blog post by South African wine journalist Neil Pendock here . He quotes some comments I made (some time ago) on Pinotage. Yes, I can understand how my hyperbolic, tongue-in-cheek remarks might have upset those who believe, like Pendock, that Pinotage is ‘the national grape and the USP of South African wine’....
Newspapers Go Silent on Agriculture Policy
Newspapers Go Silent on Agriculture Policy
In her depressing account in the American Journalism Review of newspapers withdrawing from the nation’s capital, Jodi Enda notes the following: Even if they are large, even if they are central to how Americans live their lives, most parts of the federal government—the very offices that write the rules and execute the decisions of Congress...
