November 3rd, 2009 admin

With the cold weather upon us nothing warms me up better than a bowl of steamy hot soup. A huge pot of soup simmering on the stove to me, is the perfect comfort food! Not only is it economical to make, but when you throw in some dark leafy greens such as swiss chard, you up the nutritional and health benefits too. So it’s not only something that taste’s good, it’s good for you, I call that a win win situation! Swiss chard is packed with nutrients, one of them being vitamin C. Lab studies suggest that regular consumption of foods rich in vitamin C help …

How VitaminWater XXX Uses its Ingredient List to Market Health
Ever enterprising beverage marketers will persuade normally rational people to buy colored sugar water for personal consumption, convincing them that said liquid is gloriously rich in health benefits and in some cases also uber-hip. Vitamin Water XXX is a classic example. Named for its “triple antioxidants” formula of acai, blueberry, and...
Chicken Soup for Body and Soul
A gluten-free chicken soup to cure all ills We’ve been living on soup since Sunday. No, not turkey leftovers soup. Jewish penicillin soup. You see, Steve- that ordinarily upbeat and tenacious husband of mine- has been feeling a tad under the weather these past few days. In truth, more than a tad. He’s caught a nasty cold. The kind of cold...

Judge: Lawsuit against Deceptive Vitamin Water IS Justified
Late last week a federal judge ruled in favor of consumers when he allowed a lawsuit against Vitamin Water to proceed. The lawsuit was filed in early 2009 by the advocacy group Center for Science in the Public Interest ( CSPI ). The group sued parent company Coca Cola on the grounds of fraudulent and misleading health claims, as if Vitamin Water...
Turkey Soup
An easy, homemade turkey soup simmered in a CrockPot. My favorite cure. A certain soup slurping and prickly individual (we won’t name names, to protect the innocent) has been feeling under the weather for so long now the sensation is in danger of becoming a habit. Yes, the tree pollen onslaught continues. Blessed by a wet winter, Southern California...

Study: Organic Not More Nutritious. So What!
The organic and conventional food camps have another new study to argue over. This one is published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition: A “disappointingly small” number of well-designed studies have looked at whether organic foods may have health benefits beyond their conventional counterparts’ … Those trials...
Mulligatawny Soup with Jasmine Rice
Warm up with a bowl of this mulligatawny soup. Soup weather has arrived in Southern California. The sky is flannel gray and thick with rain. The streets below are slick and shiny wet. Monday morning traffic sounds are hushed and distant. It is even a bit chilly- for L.A. standards. I am wrapped in a sweater. And I am craving mulligatawny- one of my...
Is Soup a Meal?
Is Soup a Meal?
Remember the Seinfeld episode where Jerry had to buy Kenny Bania a meal in return for an Armani suit? Their dispute hinged on whether soup constitutes a meal. Jerry insisted that it does. Bania disagreed. (Of course Jerry’s main motive was to spend as little time with the odious Bania as possible.) On this point, and this point alone, I...
Curried Carrot Soup with Pan Toasted Cornbread Croutons
Easy {slow cooker} carrot soup topped with cornbread croutons. What I love about slow cookers? The obvious. It’s a no-brainer. (Such an odd expression. I mean, if I had no brain would I care about soup?) Wait. Are zombies no-brainers? If so, I can relate. Totally. I’ve been feeling zombie-ish again, assaulted by the second wave of pollinating...

Kellogg’s Slapped by FTC, Twice, for Misleading Ads
The Federal Trade Commission normally doesn’t get involved in misleading health claims for foods, it’s the FDA’s jurisdiction. But something in Kellogg’s behavior over the past 2 years must have really annoyed somebody at the FTC. At first it was a health claim for Frosted Mini-Wheats, with benefits to“cognitive health”....
