Pinch Cake Lemon Mousse Strawberry Trifle And A Giveaway!
I’m in Atlanta for the next few days and very excited to be meeting a whole bunch of bloggers and foodies I only know via the screen. I’ve left early to prepare a workshop and also to take time to visit with friends there and put my brain cells to rest a bit. I was off to a good start by catching up with my blogging pal Chris around...
the 10 minutes challenge with 5 ingredients
the 10 minutes challenge with 5 ingredients
Last month, when I was getting ready for my trip, I had a big couple of days cooking and taking photographs of things so I wouldn’t be pressured to be blogging on the road. Rather than waste all that food, I invited a few mates around for a pot luck farewell dinner . A great old night was had by all…  Read More →
The Edible Schoolyard brings learning to life
The Edible Schoolyard brings learning to life
The cover story of this week’s East Bay Express has a provocative teaser: “Berkeley’s Edible Schoolyard teaches students how their food is produced and prepared. Is this overdue innovation or a distraction for kids who should be learning math?” So part of me was expecting a thrashing like the one delivered by Caitlin Flanagan...
Chocolate Wontons And Tonka Bean Ice Cream
Chocolate Wontons And Tonka Bean Ice Cream
If I were to wait for the proper weather to bake certain desserts, I’d never get to turn the oven on or fry some donuts and the ice cream machine would be churning year round. Take Halloween day, it was near 90F pretty much all day long and yet I wanted to bake some fun goodies for the neighbors. We…  Read More →

All The Way Away In L.A
I bet that when you think about L.A, Japanese plum blossoms are not the first things coming to your mind. Cooking outside my comfort zone, pt. 1: A remembrance of squash blossoms past
In honor of Farmers Market Week next week, I vowed here to get out of my market rut and cook outside my comfort zone . That’s how I came to be picking up these beautiful squash blossoms on impulse at the Berkeley, Calif. Farmers market on Saturday. Squash blossoms, or fiori di zucca as they are called in Italy, are my madeleines. I first...
Celebrating America’s birthday by eating our way around the world in Michigan
America isn’t a melting pot. It’s a smorgasbord. A road trip over the Fourth of July weekend proves it without even trying. Yeah, it’s Wednesday. There should be a recipe here…. [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full links, other content, and more! ]]  Read More →

el bocadillo – the definitive minimalist sandwich
OK so I have a confession. Spain has been home now for exactly a week and, well, I haven’t eaten out . That’s right seven whole days and I am yet to set foot in a restaurant or bar. Before you start wondering what’s wrong, let me explain. I’ve become addicted to the markets here. Hell, even a trip to the supermercado is...
Gluten-Free Irish Soda Bread Recipe (with millet and sorghum flour)
Delicious and simple: gluten-free Irish soda bread. I’m going to share two things today. My best Irish soda bread recipe and a sneak peek of our new loft apartment (with room to set up a studio!). The tenant next door has vacated and it’s coming together fast. We’re moving in over the next three days. So what am I up to? I’m...
The Sorry Saga of Spongebob Squarepants and Weird Science
The Sorry Saga of Spongebob Squarepants and Weird Science
It’s no surprise that cartoon characters help sell breakfast cereal and other foods to kids. But a new study suggests that those same characters might actually affect how kids perceive the taste of foods . In fact, according to the study (pdf) by the Yale Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity, kids like the taste of carrots better when...
